About MCHC Ministries
This is your sub-headline

At MCHC Ministries, our mission is clear and unwavering: to save souls and lead people into a transformative relationship with Jesus Christ. We believe that every soul matters to God, and it is our calling to reach the lost, restore the broken, and reveal the hope and salvation found only in Him.

Rooted in prayer, led by the Holy Spirit, and grounded in the Word of God, we are committed to spreading the Gospel locally and globally. Whether through community outreach, teaching, worship, or discipleship, everything we do is centered on the life-changing power of Christ.

Our goal is not just to make converts, but to make disciples—people who know Jesus personally, follow Him faithfully, and live out His love daily. At MCHC Ministries, we don't just want people to hear the Good News; we want them to experience it.

Together, we labor for the harvest, believing that now is the time for revival. Souls are waiting, and we're answering the call.

“He who wins souls is wise.” — Proverbs 11:30

Our Church History

The late Bishop H. L. Fisher who was at that time president of the United Holy Church of United Holy Church of America organized Mount Cannel Holy Church in 1933.

A few people first worshiped at 8 Bay Street, Montclair under the leadership of Mother Nannie Eason.  In 1934, Bishop Fisher granted Mother Eason’s request to send Elder W. N. Strobhar to pastor Mount Carmel.   Soon after, the congregation moved from the Bay Street address to a larger building located at 144 Bloomfield Avenue.

Having a vision from God, Elder Strobhar led the congregation to purchase an apartment house at 15 Pine Street, Montclair and decided to convert it into an edifice for God’s people.  Before coming to Mount Carmel he had organized and built First Pentecostal in Chester, Pennsylvania.  With this previous experience, he set out to build the Lord another house.  Since the membership was small, he decided to use one of the first floor apartments for services while construction was in progress.  This was done so that the funds received from rent would assist in the great undertaking. During the process of building, Elder Strobhar was elevated to the Bishopric.  He had served in many official capacities and the Lord saw befitting to elevate him to that position.

The late Charles Jones was the builder employed to renovate the building.  He worked ardently with the Bishop until the Lord called him from labor to reward.  With a fervent hope, the Bishop employed Mr. B.R. Abernathy to continue renovation of the building.

In 1950, the front of the edifice was completed.  The congregation then moved from the small quarters into the new section.  From 1950 to 1962, it seemed as though we would not succeed in our undertaking, but like the inchworm we kept moving slowly but surely.  We needed funds but banks, Mortgage and Loans institutions turned us down.  Had it not been for faith in God we would have given up many times. Each time discouragement rose, our pastor encouraged us with the words “God and one man is a majority”.  Through zeal and enthusiasm, we held on until God worked a great work; seemingly a miracle in the eyes of man, but we knew that there was nothing too hard for God.

Success is sweetest when it is won through struggle. In 1970 we experienced our greatest conflict when the Urban Renewal project threatened our church with destruction.  Other churches in the area were torn down but the Lord needs his warriors to accomplish his victories, so we prayed and fasted.  God answered our prayers and his smile upon us found expression in our lovely interior and increased facilities at 147-155 Bloomfield Avenue along with adequate parking on the lot that was acquired along Bloomfield Ave.  We experienced extended financial challenges but in 1998 God sent Pastor Eversel Griffith to us; a man of faith. In his first sermon he expressed that God had been blessing him over the years and he believed that as long as he was here as pastor, Mount Carmel would also be a recipient of some of the same blessings.  One month later, God spoke to Rev Dr. DuWayne Battle Pastor of Saint Paul’s Baptist church in Montclair to assist us in our financial struggles.  Saint Paul’s paid the entire mortgage balance and we held our mortgage burning that same year during our 65th anniversary service.

M

ount Carmel has certainly experienced both difficulties and successes but God was not through with us yet. There was much more to be done. Through the leadership of our Pastor, Rev. Dr. Eversel Griffith, the first task was to replace the drafty windows with more attractive energy efficient ones.  These were paid for through the pledges of individual church members.

Then God gave our Pastor, a vision of restoration/renovation for the entire sanctuary. The church was in dire need of repairs. Both the exterior and interior needed upgrading to state and local building code requirements. The estimated cost of the project ran close to a half million dollars. This included a new roof, face-lift of the façade, air conditioning, carpeting, plumbing and electrical work along with better visual effects, which included a new entryway and steeple. Stepping out on Faith and securing a mortgage from Wachovia Bank was a miracle. Faith without works is dead”. Each member agreed to take on the responsibility of paying the monthly mortgage through fundraisers, services and donations until such time as our congregation grew.

Time after time, our enemy tried to defeat us, but God, through the Sunday messages given to the shepherd of this house, would encourage us not to give in. He said, “We have the Power to put the devil under our feet and to take back whatever the devil stole from us “.  He always inspired us to, “Walk in the Spirit.  We knew it was God’s intention to bless us. Through much prayer, fasting, working together with the general contractor (Woods Restoration) and the hard work of our Pastor, members and friends of Mount Carmel, we were able to complete the renovation of the building.  The Church was rededicated Saturday November 6, 2004 and the building was subsequently designated as a historical building by the Montclair Historical Society.

In 2014, Pastor Griffith estimated that the church needed over $30.000 in repairs. After sincere prayer God directed him to sell the building. Concurrently, Montclair Township designated our lot as part of the Montclair Redevelopment Plan. The property was sold in November 2017 and we purchase our new property at 18-20 Washington Street, Montclair, New Jersey. The new building was dedicated July 20, 2019.

The Pastor and Trustees recognizes generous work of Pastor Angel (Fred) Narango –Contractor, mark Bess -Architect, and the ardent work of Attorney Calvin Trevenen whom Pastor Griffith nick named Miracle Man for his hard work, generosity, dedication and encouragement in attaining our new property.

Our prayer is that God continues His grace by fostering our growth and spiritual development as we strive to build. We thank God also for our former Pastors: Mother Nannie Eason, Bishop.Walter N. Strobhar, Rev. Madison H. Flewellen, and Rev. William E. Johnson.
